Boyle Fredrickson Attorney Adam Brookman Presents at WISACCA Conference

Boyle Fredrickson shareholder Adam Brookman collaborated with Amy Vandamme, vice president and assistant general counsel at Fiserv to present “Covering Your Corporate Assets – Trade Secrets, Privacy and Publicity in Wisconsin” at the Association of Corporate Counsel, Wisconsin Chapter’s (WISACCA)  annual conference.

In their presentation, Brookman and Vandamme focused on trade secret misappropriation and the effects social media has on privacy and publicity in Wisconsin. The attorneys noted that the majority of trade secret misappropriation is committed by current or former employees and that 28 percent of the “thieves” were actually former business partners of the victim. The presentation also covered common attitudes among employees that explain why they mistakenly believe they are not committing a crime by using trade secrets and steps companies can take to keep trade secret information safe.

“The number of trade secret cases has risen exponentially,” Brookman says. “In fact, a recent study indicated that the number of trade secret cases has been doubling every ten years. With the proliferation of social media and current employees’ attitudes towards openness and sharing, it is more important than ever for companies to take trade secret protection very seriously.”

In the Privacy and Publicity section of the presentation, Brookman and Vandamme explained the Wisconsin statutes regarding invasion of privacy and how they relate to publicity as well as privacy rights under federal law.
